While there are plenty of opportunities, it is essential to pick the right course and institution. Spending hard-earned money on a course that may get an average or no job is pointless. So what are the key occupations in demand in Canada or, in other words, the occupations where jobs will be available in abundance?

Let us start with IT occupations. The critical shortages are for Developer skillsets in Java, Python, Linux, SQL, .net, cloud technologies. The country also has extensive demand for IT Project Managers, Business, database, quality assurance Analysts, Network Security Engineers. Depending on the skillset and experience, the annual average salaries may start from a minimum of CAD 51,300 and may go up to CAD 123,500. The Covid situation has meant that the average earning levels have gone on the higher side by at least 10%. Targeting only top universities and technical training institutes based in major cities and provinces for IT courses may not help as the competition is stiff. Be prepared to go to ones found in smaller provinces. They provide a good quality of education and enough job opportunities, and, in due course, a provincial pathway for Canada PR visa.

In the field of commerce and accounts, the job openings primarily focus on financial services, accounting, and bookkeeping. Depending on the qualification, the average starting salary could be CAD 40,900. In due course, one could opt for high-end courses like CMA, CPA, and CA and could get into a six salary bracket. But there is a consistent demand at lower levels of accountants and bookkeepers.

If a candidate has scored less in grade 12 or has a low IELTS score and is still determined to study in Canada. In that case, one may like to look more closely at trade courses like welders, bakers, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, automotive technicians, mechanic, refrigeration/air-conditioning mechanics, heavy equipment operators, tool and die, maker and crane operators. The specialists in these trades make more money than MBAs from some of the best-known universities!! While working, a licensed tradesperson in most of these trades may make as much as 30-40 dollars an hour.

Health occupations are another much-sought category across the world. The occupations include nurses, physiotherapists, occupational, speech, and language therapists, and live-in caregivers. If one is from a science stream and has not scored enough to get into medicine or engineering courses, then look closer at undertaking professional qualifications in these occupations. Once completed, it is possible to make as much as USD 40,000 to USD 65,000 per annum. It goes up with experience.

There might be some conditions attached to studying in some of these trades, but they are not insurmountable. With a planned approach, admission – even if not possible immediately - is feasible in due course.
